Distinguished Service Cross : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Conrado Navarro Serrano (ASN: 38548970), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 503d Parachute Infantry Regiment (Separate), in action against enemy forces at Negros Island, Philippine Islands, on 26 April 1945. Private Serrano was a member of a machine gun section which was attacked by an enemy “banzai” charge. During the attack a hand grenade landed in the foxhole occupied by Private Serrano and two other men. He covered the grenade to protect his companions from injury and although seriously wounded, remained in the foxhole and continued firing at the enemy. Fearing that a call for medical aid would disclose their position and expose his comrades to enemy fire, Private Serrano refused help until the enemy were finally beaten off. He died en route to the aid station, and although in great pain and fully conscious, he continued to display great courage. Private Serrano’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
