CITATION:

Navy Cross : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Sergeant Allen E. Shively (MCSN: 381292), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, Third Amphibious Corps, during action against enemy Japanese forces on the island of Guam in the Marianas Group, 21 July 1944. Although seriously wounded during an all night fire fight, Sergeant Shively took over and manned a machine gun for five hours after two of his men were killed in their foxholes. Despite the seriousness of his wounds, he remained at his gun and materially aided in repulsing many strong hostile attacks. Attacked by a Japanese officer with drawn saber, he wrestled the saber from the man in a desperate hand-to-hand struggle and killed the enemy officer with the weapon. His great personal valor and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Shively and the United States Naval Service.
