CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Jerome J. Stark (MCSN: 271751), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on the night of September 13-14, 1942. Repeatedly leading units into assault on the ridge about 1,000 yards south of Henderson Field, First Sergeant Stark, with relentless fighting spirit and utter disregard for his own personal safety, engaged the enemy in violent hand-to-hand combat until he was severely wounded and forcibly evacuated from the front lines. His inspiring leadership and courageous persistence contributed materially to the successful defense of the airfield and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
