CITATION:

Bronze Star : for heroic action 6 to 11 April 1945 near ****, GERMANY. Sergeant THOMAS, battalion S-2, displayed great skill and heroism as the leader of two patrols across the RHINE River. On one, Sergeant THOMAS led a patrol across the river with the mission of reconnaissance and identification of enemy units. Attempting to capture two prisoners, one was immediately killed, the other he engaged in hand to hand combat. On another night, he led a patrol with the same mission. During the brief but violent action that followed their landing, Sergeant THOMAS displayed extreme coolness and excellent ability as a leader. He loaded the body of a dead enemy soldier into the boat, killed another who attempted to grenade the patrol and withdrew his patrol under small arms fire before overwhelming enemy reinforcements arrived. Sergeant THOMAS' bravery and leadership reflects great credit on the highest traditions of the United States Airborne Forces.

Entered military service from PONTIAC, MICHIGAN.
