Use of photos from this site in books

Hello all,

I was in WH Smiths today and casually looking at the History books and I picked up Gavin Mortimer's new book "The SAS in World War II: An illustrated history" and I was extremely surprised to see it contained three photos that I have posted on this site.

The photos are from my Great Uncle Fred Senior's personal photograph album - two of the photos in the book are of Fred and one is of three men from 8 commando by the Great Bitter Lake.

I have no problem with images being out there in the public domain and no problem with the images being in the book and the book does rightly reference John Robertson and this website which is good. However I would be happier if I had been contacted - primarily as I would have been happy to provide the author with a whole load of other 8 commando photos and other SAS documents I have collected during my research. Also one of the photos was acknowledged with "Author's own collection".

This is a superb website and I have gained a lot from it - in my own case I have also provided info and photos to a number of families researching ancestors through this website. I think this is different from supplementing a personal profit making book.

Gavin obviously did not note the acknowledgements on the photos.I'm not really wishing to see my name quoted as I created the website for families and friends to contribute to and make the site their own as an everlasting memorial which they can visit.Gavin is working in conjunction with and with the approval of the SAS Association in providing information and photos which would otherwise not be seen.I can only apologise on both our behalfs for a breakdown in communication.
Best wishes
John
