Billy Waugh also wrote about working with Al Qaeda operators in 1990s Yemen. That was most likely during the 1994 civil war when the USA was allied with northern forces who in turn were allied to Arab Mujahideen who'd settled in Yemen after the 1980s Afghan-Soviet War. Waugh wrote:
"I worked right there with these al-Qaeda operatives and heard these arguments [about the badness of US policy) firsthand many times, especially during an assignment in Yemen"

I was in Yemen in 1997 on a business trip to setup a new factory in Taiz (near Al Qaidah town), a sale made by our US sales agent (a 101st veteran of Hamburger Hill) who I think knew Waugh from Vietnam & the HALO training program specifically).
