SIKORSKY HH-53 PAVELOW (REGISTRATION: 69-5787)
HH-53C #69-5787, assigned to the 33d ARRSq, crashed into the Pacific Ocean 53 miles northeast of Kadena AB. While refueling, the crew moved too far forward and hit the refueling hose with the main rotor blades. Collateral damage to the blades stimulated severe lateral vibrations and caused the tail rotor to separate. The aircraft crashed inverted near a coral reef, killing three crew members. The fourth man was rescued by a local fisherman.
