CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Billie J. Blansett (ASN: 20811377), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 4 July 1944, near ****, France. The platoon to which Staff Sergeant Blansett belonged was halted in a dense woods at the base of Hill No. 95 by enemy small arms, rifle grenade and mortar fire. This platoon was the leading element of a flanking attack on the enemy's rear and was fired upon by machine guns which killed the platoon leader and platoon sergeant. Staff Sergeant Blansett assumed command and maintained control of the platoon and proceeded with the execution of the mission without delay. Staff Sergeant Blansett displayed remarkable leadership and initiative, and was instrumental in keeping up the momentum of the advancing troops in his rear. The actions of Staff Sergeant Blansett reflects great credit on himself and the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
