I'm trying to find out the first name of a trooper from the early 'L Detachment' based in Tikrit in 1941. His surname was Kaufman, he was a Londoner but I am hoping somebody on here might know his first name.

I have looked through the archive on thi site but not had any luck yet. His surname appears in David Stirling's biog by Alan Hoe but that's all.

Any ideas?

I'm not 100% sure but i think it may be Isaac.
There is a P.O.W. record for 6098454, Private I.I. Kaufman, The Queens Royal Regiment. P.O.W. No. 8054. Stalag 344,
Lambinowice, Poland. There are only 2 Kaufman's in the record, the other being a sergeant so it is likely this is your man. He may have been known as "Ike" or "Cockney".
Although i can't confirm it i believe he was with Lt.Bonningtons stick or Lt. McGonigals.
I did a quick births search for I Kaufman and came up with 2 Israels from 1912/13 and 2 Isaacs from 1915. One Israel has a second name begining with J so unless the P.O.W.record is incorrect i think you can discount him. The 1915 dates seems to be the right to me but i'm only really assuming. hope this will be of use,
regards,
Alan Orton.

Sorry I can't shed any light as to his first name but I've read about him and he seemed like a real character. He apparently pinched a load of bricks from an RAF camp and made POWs build 'L' detachment a canteen - which was better than the officers' marquee! :p
