My grandfather lived in Dalbeattie and was married to my grandmother Jean C Smith. He had six sons and one daughter, my mother. One son, who had a heart defect, died in December 1944, when my grandfather was serving, whilst the youngest son was born in November 1945, 7 months after my grandfather was killed in action.
