Nicknamed Popski, he was a Belgian-born soldier of Russian émigré parents who himself emigrated to Egypt in 1924 and was later commissioned into the British army.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"></span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)">Officially known as No 1 Demolition Squadron and some 80 strong, PPA was formed of Jeep-mounted patrols which roved behind enemy lines, doing as much damage as possible. Each man, including L/Cpl Ron Jewell, who joined in January 1944, was chosen by Popski himself.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"></span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)">It was a highly irregular military life. Jewell’s first encounter with Popski was at a hospital in Naples, where he was ordered to take the nurses on a short break to the beaches at Sorrento. “I was bored to death and wanted to return to base,” Jewell said afterwards.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"></span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)">Combat operations were considerably more exciting. It was a feature of PPA patrols that, with their tremendous firepower and ability to move quickly, they could mislead the enemy about the strength of the forces opposing them. In April 1945 Jewell was in “R Patrol” at Chioggia, a town south of the Venice lagoon.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"></span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)">There, an officer of the American OSS (forerunner to the CIA) had persuaded the Germans, under a flag of truce, that he was in the advance guard of a substantial force which would attack if the Germans did not surrender. They believed him and he left under the pretext of needing to call off the attack.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"></span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)">He found support nearby in R Patrol, whose commanding officer cycled back with the American to confirm to the Germans that the attack had been cancelled. The reality was that the Germans were 1,100 strong while R Patrol had six Jeeps of three men each. When R Patrol entered the town, surrounded, as Jewell recalled, by armed Germans, they drove to a hotel where they were wined and dined by their capitulating hosts. The unconditional surrender also secured two 88mm field gun batteries, one coastal defence gun battery, 120 heavy machine guns, and three months’ supplies.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"></span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)">By then PPA had helped to liberate Ravenna, an ancient city renowned for its treasures of Byzantine art. In nearby Classe, gunners from the Eighth Army were convinced that the Germans were using the bell tower of the magnificent Basilica di Sant'Apollinare as an artillery observation post. By establishing that they were not, Popski was able to prevent its destruction.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"></span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)">After a dawn raid by forces under the control of a young partisan code-named Bulow, PPA stormed in from Ravenna’s east, while conventional Allied forces attacked from the south and west. Demobilised later in 1945, he moved to London, where he joined the Meteorological Office. Unfortunately, his duties required him to work on weather boats, but he suffered from terrible seasickness and was forced to resign.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"></span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)">He subsequently returned to Swansea, where he worked in a steel factory until his retirement in 1995.
