Malone was instructed to go to the weapons platoon's position to collect his platoon's mail. </em></span></p> <p style="margin-left: 20px"></p> <p style="margin-left: 20px"><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"><em>When he failed to return to his company's position by 1830 hours for the daily briefing that all personnel were required to attend, a search was initiated in the area of his last known position. </em></span></p> <p style="margin-left: 20px"></p> <p style="margin-left: 20px"><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"><em>Jungle boot prints believed to have been made by Jimmy Malone were found outside the battalion's defensive position. These boot prints were followed for a short distance where shower shoe foot prints of the type worn by the Viet Cong were seen to link up with the jungle boot prints. </em></span></p> <p style="margin-left: 20px"></p> <p style="margin-left: 20px"><span style="color: rgb(184, 49, 47)"><em>At that point the patrol followed the prints until they reached a fortified enemy position.
