F.P. Scoggins This is my grandfather. I have researched his death and learned the following from naval archives and shipmates who visited my grandmother after the war. The men of UDT-9 serving on the Belknap were leaving the Lingayen Gulf off the Philippines after recon of Orange beach. A japanese plane dove from high in the sky and skimmed the top of the water headed towards the Belknap. My grandfather along with other UDT-9 men jumped in a boat carried alongside the Belknap which was used to drop the swimmers in the water with. These boast were armed with machine guns. My grandfather was manning one of the guns shooting at the jap plane when in crashed directly on his position. His body along with others was never recovered. he was listed as MIA and later announced KIA along with the other men. I believe there were 23 UDT-9 men killed in that attack.
