My uncle is listed as KIA in Holland. That is incorrect. He was MIA in Italy where his remains were found ten years after the war. He is buried in the Netherlands as indicated.

Info I received from Joe Springer.

"Joe Glass (1-2) and Charlie Mills (5-2) were good friends prior to the Force. On Anzio Mills was assigned as assistant to Capt Fred Hubbard, CO of 5-2. Though Mills is listed MIA-PD Mills died in the arms of Pvt Gill McNeese during a deep night raid on enemy positions near The Quarry, a stronghold close to Littoria. (My uncle, Pvt John Springer, also of 5-2, was also killed on this raid.) Due to the hectic and dangerous nature of the raid, once both men were confirmed deceased by Hubbard, they were left behind the lines owing to the nessessity of a speedy withdrawl for survival. (The Battalion was surrounded.) Ultimately, the sad and unfortunate death of Charlie Mills caused considerable heartbreak and ongoing debate among the rank and file of 5-2."
