CITATION:

Mention In Despatches : WOOD was captured in Italy on 3 October 1943 whilst serving with the 1st S.A.S. Regt.

He made an unsuccessful attempt to escape FROSINONE, and a few days later he jumped from a moving train. He was very near the front line whn recaptured.

In December 1943, he cut his way through the wire at SULMONA and walked without stopping for two days. This time he was captured in "no man's land".

After a stay in hospital recovering from frost bite, WOOD was put on a train for Germany. Four time he cut his way out of the trucks in which he was travelling, but was always discovered by the guard.
