Prior to joining the military Murray Kirkwood taught at Harvard and Pomona. He held degrees from Pomona, Oxford, Harvard and Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

During WWII served with the First Special Service Force and rose to the rank of Major.
After the War he joined ITT and became the Director of Public Relations and later Vice President of Public Relations.
