AVRO LANCASTER MKIII (REGISTRATION: NF923)
Homeward-bound, the aircraft was shot down by night fighter pilot Hauptmann Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer of the Stab IV./NJG 1, who was flying a Bf 110 G-4 from Dortmund-Brackel airfield in Germany.
One crew member did not survive the jump and P/O. Benting died of his injuries some two days later. The pilot died in the aircraft when it crashed near Lochem:
