CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel Van Harold Newville (AFSN: FR-52405), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an AC-47 Aircraft Commander of the 4th Air Commando Squadron, 14th Air Commando Wing, Phu Cat Air Base, Vietnam, near Hue, Republic of Vietnam, on 3 October 1967. On that date, Colonel Newville and his crew provided close air support for beleaguered elements of the 7th Cavalry Regiment. Ignoring treacherous weather and hostile ground fire, Colonel Newville and his crew maintained a sustained heroic performance in support of friendly forces. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Colonel Newville has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
