1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment (77 ind. Bde)

hi I am trying to find out about my great uncle, Geoffrey Arthur Turner who served with the 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment (77 ind. Bde). His name is on the memorial at Rangoon and I understand he died over in Burma of Maleria. I have been looking into the role his regiment played but I wondered if anybody has any photos of him as I have been unable to find any images of him so far.

Any assistance would be appreciated and can be sent to s.kirby2010@btinternet.com

I'm new to this forum but I'm trying to find out more information about Lt Kenneth Paul Gray Cobb (210261) originally of the Royal Engineers but attached to 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment serving with the Chindits. He died 22nd March 1944 in Burma.

Any further information as to the circumstances surrounding his death would be gratefully received.

Hi Anne,

Judging by his date of death I would imagine he died during the initial defence of the Chindit stronghold named 'White City'.

Two books for you to read would be:

'Prisoners of Hope', by Mike Calvert, who was the commander of 77th Brigade including the S. Staffs.

"March or Die', by Phil Chinnery for an overview of the entire campaign.

I have a simple list from the S. Staffs war diary showing Lt. Cobb and his date of death. These diaries are available to view at he National Archives at Kew.

I will send you a pm with my contact details.

I sent some information to skirby but have no idea if they have received it or not?

Best wishes

Steve
