CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Raymond M. DePouli, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Squad Leader of 1st Squad, Company A, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, during combat operations in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, during Operation ANACONDA in Afghanistan on 3 to 4 March 2002. Staff Sergeant DePouli's valorous actions while in direct contact with enemy forces and in the face of extreme duress during the successful rescue of Special Operators contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and to the saving of additional lives. Staff Sergeant DePouli was responsible for engaging and destroying two enemy personnel who were engaging friendly aircraft and fellow Rangers. He was a critical subordinate leader during the seizure of the ridgeline, the defeat of two enemy counterattacks, and the consolidation, treatment and evacuation of casualties. The gallantry displayed by Staff Sergeant DePouli during 18 hours of combat is in keeping with the highest standards of valor. Through his distinctive accomplishments, Staff Sergeant DePouli reflected great credit upon himself, the United States Army, and the Department of Defense.
