Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Allen Fred Chaves (MCSN: 2269791), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company D, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 May 1967. While on an eight man reconnaissance patrol deep in enemy territory, Private First Class Chaves was point man when the patrol was confronted by fifteen enemy. Exhibiting uncommon courage, initiative and great professional skill, he immediately took the enemy under fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, he exposed himself time and time again to the intense enemy small arms fire while he maneuvered to a position from which he could hurl grenades at the enemy. As the patrol maneuvered into position, Private First Class Chaves again demonstrated inspiring courage and daring as he exposed himself to the enemy fire and began to gain fire superiority so the rest of the patrol could join him. So intense and accurate was his fire that he alone gained fire superiority permitting the patrol to reach his position and repulse the enemy. In so doing, Private First Class Chaves fell mortally wounded as his comrades reached his position. By his skill, daring, initiative and loyal devotion to duty, Private First Class Chaves upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
