CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal [then Private First Class] Frank William Humes (ASN: 51985239), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Humes distinguished himself while serving as an Assistant Team Leader of a long range reconnaissance patrol with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division. During early afternoon hours of 8 July 1969, the 1st Brigade's four-man long range patrol team made contact with an enemy force of fifteen enemy. Private First Class Humes immediately requested artillery and gunship support. Private First Class Humes repeatedly exposed himself to the enemy so that he could best adjust artillery fire. Later, as the team continued to patrol the area, Private First Class Humes spotted one enemy soldier in the woodline and killed him. Almost immediately the team received intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from surrounding positions. As the team employed fire and movement tactics to break contact with the superior enemy force, Private First Class Humes courageously remained behind providing covering fire. After his comrades had reached covered positions they began laying down a base of fire to cover Private First Class Humes' movement. As he moved towards the team, Private First Class Humes was mortally wounded. Private First Class Humes' personal bravery, outstanding performance and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
