CITATION:

Silver Star : For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Sergeant Sieting distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 31 August 1968 as a member of a long-range reconnaissance team. On the team's fifth day of a patrol in enemy territory, it was ambushed by a heavily armed reinforced enemy platoon. Sergeant Sieting valiantly exposed himself to the fuselage to direct counter fire on the attackers. When the enemy began throwing grenades into his team's positions, Sergeant Sieting picked them up and hurled them back at the aggressors. His personal example inspired his comrades to fight more fiercely and they were able to keep the numerically superior enemy from over-running them. As the battle continued Sergeant Sieting directed air strikes on the hostile force. At times the bombs came to within 30 meters of his own position. He continued to direct his patrol’s defense until he was mortally wounded. Sergeant Sieting’s gallantry in action, at the cost of his life, was in keeping with the highest tradition of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
