CITATION:

British Empire Medal : Corporal Ainsworth was hit in the back by a piece of shrapnel during the bombing of his ship. In spite of great pain to himself he refused medical aid until he eventually fainted through loss of blood. During this time he had carried six wounded from the mess-deck to the sick bay.

In his Commanding Officer's opinion this non-commissioned officer displayed outstanding devotion to duty and utter disregard for personal safety.
