CITATION:

Mention in Despatches : On 1st January 1964 Marine ASKWITH a young man of eighteen, was the LMG gunner of a small patrol following up a large group of Indonesian terrorists.

When contact was made the patrol immediately came under heavy fire. ASKWITH operated his gun coolly and efficiently and his return fire caused casualties and broke up repeated enemy attacks. The patrol commander, Corporal MARRIOTT, was killed but ASKWITH took charge, and by his gallantry, steadiness and leadership during half an hour of sustained fighting, inspired his small force and helped to defeat the enemy.

In the face of repeated charges by a force that outnumbered Wanne then about fifteen to one, Marine ASKWITH and his men showed such fighting qualities as to demoralise the enemy and force them to abandon their purpose. This action stopped the enemy force from penetrating deeper into the ********, where, according to captured maps, their objective was KUCHING airfield. It raised the prestige of the Security Forces in SARAWAK and has given increased confidence to the local people.

Place : Gunong Brunei Ridge
Date of Action : 1st January 1964
