CITATION:

Military Medal : For most conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 1st December the above mentioned soldier was engaged in the Coy attack on strong enemy machine gun positions (Tunisia Sheet 2 J6766). During the action Pte. Bainbridge was detailed by the Medical Officer to assist two wounded soldiers down to a near-by farm. The enemy brought his heavy mortar to bear on the farm which made it untenable and the Coy was forced to withdraw from the hill. Owing to the darkness and the nature of the ground Pte Bainbridge and the wounded could not be found. Pte. Bainbridge realising after a time that no assistance was forthcoming, assisted the wounded men, one whom he had to carry most of the way under fire to a farm some three miles away. He made them as comfortable as possible and remained with them all night well knowing that enemy patrols were active in that area. In the morning he contacted our own troops and arranged for their evacuation. Pte. Bainbridge by his coolness and disregard for his own personal safety and sense of duty prevented the wounded men from falling into enemy hands as the enemy took possession of the farm later that night.
