This was my uncle. My mothers younger brother. Unfortunately my mother is no longer living and I am trying to find out as much information about my uncle as I can. We have no medals or Gold Star booklet or any information regarding my uncles military service. Any help would be appreciated. How long was he in Army for? How did he become OSS member? How many missions was he on and where? Thank you.

Good Afternoon John,
I have not forgotten about contacting you. I found some of the pictures of my uncle that you wanted but I am not sure on how to send them to you. I was also looking on a site through the Office of Strategic Services Operational Groups under Personnel and found my uncles name listed incorrectly under Balkis II. They have him listed as Sgt. Bernie A. Ballone and it should be Bennie. Also, is there a way that I can get copies of his paperwork and medals? I would love to have these to share with our family so they know our history and what a hero he was.
If you can contact me then I will be able to send you the pictures that I have found of him including his funeral.
Thank you,
Kathy Bumpass

If Mr. Ballone was OSS then his complete military records are likely preserved at the National Archives & Records Administration, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20408 - Telephone USA (866) 272-6272 - CALL THEM - they are very helpful. You need to explain he was shot down over Italy and his body temporarily interred there, including dates if you have them. In about two-weeks you will receive confirmation they have found the records in the Office of Strategic Services "Personnel Files" (this notification is by letter to your mailing address) -- NARA will send you an order form. As soon as you make arrangements to pay for ordering the file (which can be done with a credit card by telephone) -- NARA will mail you a copy of the complete personnel file (takes 2-weeks to a month) which will include induction and discharge information, medals, ribbons & citations awarded, and medical information. Good luck.
