We have returned from Holland after visiting the National Military Museum in Soesterberg where a painting of my late Uncle, Sgt William Allan Baxter, who was killed along with 6 other crew members in Operation Gerrit 1, has now gone on permanent display. We also visited the Cemetery in Gilze to pay our respects to the fallen crew.
After 6 years of researching elements of the Operation and contact with the Museum in relation to the painting, which it has been established was painted by a relative of crew member Sgt Royston William Bullen, I am pleased that the painting is now on display and the crew are being remembered in a special way.
I would like to thank Margaret for all her help, my cousins, Anne & Margaret for very kindly gifting the painting to me, Mr John Robertson
(ROH) for his advice throughout the process, and Mr Alfred Staarman,
Curator of the Museum, for his co-operation and contact over the past 6 years and his hospitality during our visit to the Museum.
May the crew who perished, and Sgt C. Bowker, who fortunately survived,
always be remembered by those who view the painting in its new home.
