CITATION:

Bronze Star : For heroic action as a member of an underwater demolition team during the capture of enemy Japanese-held Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, Feb. 17, 1945. Brave in the face of hostile rifle, machine-gun and mortar fire, Blackwood aided in preparing the way for the operations of combat troops and, by his skill, determination and aggressiveness, contributed materially to the success of this hazardous mission. His gallant performance of duty throughout reflects the highest credit upon Blackwood and the United States Naval Service.
