Military Cross : Captured 2 Dec 42 in TUNISIA after a parachute operation. Sent to Camp 66 (CAPUA) from where he made an attempted escape with Lt. KIER, 1st Commando. Was recaptured the first night and on refusing to say how they had obtained money and clothes was struck in the stomach and over the eye with a revolver. On 18 Mar 43 was transferred to Camp 21 (CHEITI). On the first day of arrival he and other officers started a tunnel. On 15 Sep eleven people went down the tunnel taking with them food and water. They found that the far end had been sealed up. 36 hours later they came up and made their way to the North bank of the PESCARA River. They were picked up by Capt. LEE, S.A.S. who had a plan, which did not materialise, for evacuating 300 ex-P/W. Later BOITEAUX-BUCHANAN continued on alone. He forded the River SANGRO and at VILLAFONSINA was rounded up as an Italian civilian and forced to dig slit trenches for two days, during which time he was not fed. Recrossed the River SANAGO and went back to SAN LORENZO. When the Germans prepared to evacuate this town BOITEAUX-BUCHANAN left dressed as a woman and reconnoitred possible means of getting through. He returned to SAN LORENZO and told all who were interested, British, Czechs and Italians, how this could be done. He rejoined his unit at BARLETTA.
