CITATION:

Silver Star : At Vuru Village, Vangunu, Solomon Islands, on July 1, 1943, Pvt. Burkholder was credited with locating and killing three well-concealed enemy snipers who had been constantly harassing his Infantry platoon. When the platoon maneuvered to a new position of attack, he voluntarily covered the rear elements. This action, which was responsible for the success of the movement, cost him his life.
