CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Daryl D. Campbell (MCSN: 455998), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Leader in a Rifle Platoon of Company K, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 20 June 1945. Fearlessly leading his assault squad up a steep and treacherous slope toward the last Japanese strong point on Okinawa, Corporal Campbell skillfully maintained control of his men despite the deadly and relentless barrage fired by a trapped and desperate enemy, repeatedly risking his life to determine the most strategic approach to the fiercely defended emplacement and to reorganize his men as casualties mounted. After many hours of slow and tortuous progress and the loss of many of his men, he successfully gained the top of the ridge, thereby enabling his platoon to begin its advance upward. Later, when his unit was attacked by hidden snipers, he unhesitatingly pressed forward alone in a valiant attempt to destroy the hostile riflemen but was mortally wounded before accomplishing his mission. By his aggressive leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and daring courage in the face of grave peril, Corporal Campbell inspired his men to greater efforts during the final action on Okinawa and contributed directly to the ultimate capture of this vital Japanese stronghold. His heroic conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
