CITATION:

Member of the British Empire : 22652120 Warrant Officer II Robert Gilles Campbell was responsible for the logistic support to troops engaged on operations in the Dhofar from the start of operation 'Storm' on 28 Dec 70 and for the subsequent 18 months.

He was a tower of strength in planning the supply and the movement of many hundreds of tons of stores from the United Kingdom to troops in field battle stations over a wide and mountainous desert region. In this complex, exacting task which entailed setting up of field base and forward supply dumps he showed remarkable ability and initiative, overcoming problems with sound commonsense, good judgement and steadiness not normally expected of his rank. The responsibilities involved were commensurate to senior commissioned rank rather than Campbell's status.

In addition he performed the duties of Quartermaster for the whole force including equipping and feeding some 500 locally recruited native troops as well as 2 Squadrons of SAS and other supporting troops. In this task he excelled, shouldering the responsibility willingly and efficiently, with the minimum manpower and vehicles. He maintained this force successfully although widely dispersed over difficult terrain of several hundreds of miles.

In addition he held full responsibility of day to day running of the SAS Base, in which he developed a meticulously organised headquarters with the highest standards of discipline. His personal leadership played a direct and important part in maintaining the high state of morale pertaining in these difficult conditions.

Most of the credit for the smooth manner in which the support for the operation was organised was due entirely to his untiring efforts and devotion to duty. His sound advice, driver and commonsense approach to problems was remarked upon most favourable by senior officers.
