CHINDIT - Please Help!

I am trying to find out any information I can about my grandfather Frederick Arthur Toulmin (number: 3440909). He was in the Lancashire Fusiliers and served from December 1932 until February 1954. I know he served in Burma and I have lots of his photographs of this time (some are quite graphic). Can anybody tell me if he was a Chindit? I have also heard he was a D D Dodger. Could this be possible? I look forward to hearing from anybody with any information. I will scan pictures of group photographs I have in case anybody can recognise their own family members.

Hi Elaine,

Your Grandfather may well have been a Chindit, but these things are very difficult to find out for certain.

The LF's took part in both Chindit operations in Burma, but it was the 1st battalion in 1944, where the greater number were involved. If memory serves me correctly the 10th battalion also fought in Burma, but not as Chindits.

Your best bet, although it can take a long time to come through is to see if you can order his Army Service records from the MOD office in Glasgow.

Best wishes and good luck.
