Cpl Kenneth Edward Clarke was actually an Austrian Jew called Kurt Theodore Goldschlager who was an accomplished swimmer and linguist.
Born into a wealthy Viennese family in 1913, his father was the architect Julius Goldschlager (lots of buildings designed by him in Vienna if you Google him)
Kurt was the youngest of 4 children, all of whom made it westwards just before the Austrian Pograms started taking Jews to the camps and exterminating them.
His father was dead by then, but his Jewish mother, Aunts and in-laws were not so lucky and met violent deaths at the hands of the Nazis.
If you access the records on him in the UK National Archives you will find he lived at one time in a place called 'Clouds' in Roydon near Stanstead airport and took British citizenship just after the war was over. The rather unfortunate thing that followed that however, was that after dodging bullets right across Europe, he then got in with the wrong crowd and ended up being murdered after gangland dispute on a London street.
