CITATION:

Mention in Despatches : Major Cooper had been the Padre of the Second Battalion The Parachute Regiment for 18 months. During this time he has built up a remarkable rapport with the soldiers which, together with his personal example, courage and spiritual commitment, was to pay dividends throughout the entire Falkland Islands campaign. During the Battalion's bitter and extremely hard fought twenty four hour battle for Port Darwin and Goose Green on 28/29 May 1982 Major Cooper was attached to the Regimental Aid Post. Throughout he moved tirelessly and with complete disregard for his own safety to bring reassurance to the soldiers and comfort to the injured. He also played a significant role in the evacuation of the wounded. During this period he was under constant artillery, mortar and small arms fire : his action was a steadying influence and an inspiration to all. Again his outstanding qualities were to come to the fore during a serious ammunition explosion at Goose Green. He showed a similar presence later during an air attack on the Fitzroy Settlement when there were a high number of casualties. Despite fatigue, cold and intense enemy artillery fire in the battle for Wireless Ridge on 13/14 May 1982 he continued to display the same high standards. The Battalion owes an enormous dept of gratitude to a selfless, dedicated and courageous man who lives up to the very highest traditions of his calling.
