CITATION:
Distinguished Conduct Medal : At LEROS in November 1943 Sgt Coventry was part of a patrol of this unit holding the Mount CLIDI position. Before the battle began he showed great courage in assisting the removal of men who were wounded when a naval gun scored a direct hit. During the battle his complete personal disregard for safety was outstanding and with only two men was responsible for the capture of 17 Germans who were holding up our successful attempt to recapture the position. During the last phase of the battle he held the forward slopes of this feature with a handful of men until finally he ordered his party to leave while he carried 2 wounded men to safety on his back. He subsequently escaped from LEROS after the occupation by the Germans.
