CITATION:

Mention in Despatches : Major B.L. Edwards has commanded Z Company 45 Commando RM since April 1967. Throughout his period of command in South Arabia, Major Edwards has shown outstanding qualities of leadership, and a remarkably tactical sense. His company operations were planned in meticulous detail and his close personal control of these operations whether on the ground or by radio, has been first class.

It was latterly in the Wa'alla District of Aden, that Major Edwards showed his abilities as a company commander to the full. In a very tricky IS situation where an error of judgment or inadequate briefing of the company on his part might have had tragic results, he set a standard of professionalism that would be difficult to equal. He not only conducted a number of extremely well executed operations against the terrorists with great success, but also, by firm and intelligent handling of the situation, he instilled a sense of confidence not only into his men, but also into the less virulently ant-British local nationals. As a result of this, his company area was one of the most quiet and peaceful during the closing stages of the withdrawal.

In short Major Edwards is a first class soldier and an outstanding company commander.
