Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Benjamin D. Ferguson (MCSN: 353812), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Marine Raider Battalion during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area on 9 November 1943. Acting as scout for a replacement platoon which had lacked opportunity to establish its own line before departure of the unit it had relieved, Private First Class Ferguson, upon voluntarily crossing a small stream under heavy fire, discovered the enemy firmly entrenched, with an establishment of several machine-gun nests in a position which gravely endangered his platoon. Rather than quietly withdraw and leave his comrades to their fate, he boldly disclosed his own position by calling to his platoon leader the location of hostile emplacements, thereby drawing immediate fire which resulted in his death. His heroic conduct and spirit of self-sacrifice were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
