Force 136 in Malaya

Hi,

Following on from a family interest (my father's cousin was a member) I have begun researching Force 136 in Malaya. There is a lot of information at the National Archives and the Imperial War Museum, but I would be very interested in contacting relatives of those involved. I only know of a few surviving veterans, and they were all local recruits.

On my visits to the archives, I would be happy to do look-ups, time permitting.

If during your research you come across mention of Captain Joshua William Stuart Edmundson Royal Engineers do let me know.

I am trying to find out what he did and where he was posted. He served in Force 136 from 10 Dec 1944 when he arrived at New Delhi to Aug 1945. He then went to SACSEA

Thank you

Sorry, can't help you with him. I am 99% certain he wasn't in Malaya.

There is a lot of info in the National Archives - you might be able to find his personnel file online in the HS9 series, and if it is open that would probably fill you in - though you would have to go the archives to see it.

Good luck - and I'll let you know if I spot him.

Many thanks - the fact that he joined SOE and Force 136 and moved on to SACSEA came from TNA but no other details.

Restricted still?

The search goes on

Hm - I take it you saw the personnel file, then. These are only opened if the person to which they relate was born over a 100 years ago, or there is proof that they're dead (death cert or published obit).

Your other tack could be to look up the operational rolls of the various operations. For Malaya, there is one file which contains a sheet giving the personnel for each op, and I used these to draw together a more-or-less complete list for the entire country (those dead, exfiltrated or in prison had to be filled in later).

Burma was (as far as I have gathered) the biggest area of ops, but other countries worth a look are the Netherlands East Indies and French Indo-China. Once you have the operation, you might hit paydirt and find out lots in a nice detailed report. Also, there are all sorts of bits and pieces in memoirs, and private papers at the IWM - but again, you really need to know the op and the names of the others on said op.

Wish you luck...
