Hello - I have been trying to interpret the X list from my relatives service record.

I have used the information that is on the web to understand the relevance of the Xi, Xii nomenclature but I'm still not fully clear on all the details on the form.

The are a lot of codes in there to do with promotions which I don't fully understand but I'm most interested in the date at which he left Middle East Commando/1st Special Service Regiment to join the SAS. It looks like it was September 1942 but there is a previous entry "SAS BDE" that makes me think it was earlier (March 1942).

Is there anyone who can provide guidance on this?

Thanks,
Sam

sas is made up of members of layforce ( 8 commando mainly). layforce was created out of amalgamated commando groups in the area such as 8 commando and 50 through 52 ME commando. they take part as layforce in the rearguard action on crete where they lose D battalion and many other on crete ( I think A battalion comes back to Egypt in strength) so you would be looking post crete. after crete layforce is split and teh men go into holding as spares and some go to other commando type unts such as 1 SS regiment. if you can scan me a copy of his record I can have a look see if I can decipher it for you

My grandfather was D batt layforce and joined the sas in 43 after escaping crete
