CITATION:
British Empire Medal : SSM JAMES has been an outstanding squadron sergeant major for the last year. Throughout, he has personally set an extraordinarily high standard and his sense of humour combined with great knowledge has earned him the respect of his men and his officers. For the last six months he has been commanding a troop in the jungle and has been personally involved in two engagements with the terrorists, on one occasion wounding the bodyguard of a high ranking communist terrorist. His excellent example of how a troop ought to be run has led to him to be used to train newly joined officers, which he has done extremely efficiently.
