i am trying to find out any information regardin my father's cousin Lance Corporal Charles Thornton , 3450972 1st Btn Lancashire Fusiliers ( 77th Indian Infantry Brigade ) who was killed on 18th June 1944 in Burma.Quite possibly he was killed during the battle for Moguang , which was where his brigade was when he died.I would love to locate a regimental photo of his intake if that's possible.

Hi Alan,

At the National Archives there is a War diary for the 1st LF's, it may have some details for you. The file reference is WO172/4891.

also at the Archives are a number of Missing in Action reports for the battalion.
WO361/394
WO361/395

I cannot be sure if the last documents are for the Chindit operation or slightly afterwards?
There is also a website for the LF's at:

http://www.lancs-fusiliers.co.uk/index.html

I know there are some good group photos on that site.

Over the last 5 years or so I have managed to trace my own Grandfather's last moments in Burma, right down to his death in Rangoon Jail as a POW. The National Archives has been he place that has held the vast majority of the documentary evidence in my own research.

Good luck

Steve

My father was a company commander with the Lancashier Fusiliers, sorry I do not know which company it was, I do however have a company photograph it may be your fathers cousin could in the photograph, from my research a company consists of 100 men a column consists of 400 men, the Lancashire Fusiliers had 2 columns in Burma which suggests 8 companys were involved, I'm not sure how it works but I have attached the photograph,
regards
