CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Wilbur D. Martin (ASN: 32022345), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company *, *** Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment. On ** November 1942, while on duty as a squad leader in a machine gun platoon, Sergeant Martin, with a party of men being transported by plane over the ***, was attacked by six enemy fighter planes. The plane in which Sergeant Martin was riding was forced to crash land. The men who were not wounded immediately abandoned the plane and took cover. Despite the fact that the enemy planes were strafing the crashed plane, Sergeant Martin left his place of cover, and without order and of his own volition returned to the crashed plane and carried a wounded comrade to safety. Sergeant Martin's actions inspired the morale of the men in his group despite the circumstances, showed extraordinary courage and bravery beyond the call of duty, and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
