CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade William McCord, Jr. (ASN: 12085351), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Company, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 10 June 1944, near ****, France. Technician Fifth Grade McCord was a member of a group of about thirty-five enlisted men and officers surrounded by a numerically superior force of enemy machine gunners and snipers. After trying for two hours to extricate itself from an untenable situation, during which it suffered numerous casualties, an assault with Gammon Grenades was decided upon. This assault was organized and led by Technician Fifth Grade McCord. At the successful completion of this action, it was learned that Technician Fifth Grade McCord had been fatally wounded. The withdrawal of the remaining members of this group without further casualties is attributed to the high degree of bravery, initiative, and aggressiveness of Technician Fifth Grade McCord. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
