CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Gerald G. McGinley (MCSN: 2424469), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company A, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 5 December 1968, Lance Corporal McGinley was a member of reconnaissance team assigned to provide security for a vital radio relay site in Quang Tri Province, when the Marines were assaulted by an estimated forty North Vietnamese Army soldiers. During the ensuing engagement, Lance Corporal McGinley, whose assignment was to defend the landing zone, received the initial onslaught and was repeatedly subject to savage attacks by elements of the determined enemy force. With complete disregard for his own safety, he fearlessly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he tenaciously resisted dislodgement from his vital defensive position. His aggressive fighting spirit and calm presence of mind under fire were instrumental in repelling the North Vietnamese and in accounting for four hostile soldiers confirmed killed, within twenty meters of his position. By his courage, resolute determination and unfaltering devotion to duty at great personal risk, Lance Corporal McGinley upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
