CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private William J. McLean (ASN: 31462269), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 30 April 1945, near ****, Germany. Private McLean, a member of a reserve platoon, when two assault platoons were pinned down, volunteered to go with a small patrol to outflank the enemy group. There was no cover of concealment available for the patrol to use and they were soon detected and fired upon by the enemy. Private McLean, disregarding the enemy fire, continued forward, firing as he went until fatally wounded. Private McLean's conspicuous gallantry was in accordance with the highest standards of the American Airborne Soldier.
