CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) (Posthumously) to Private First Class Hughie McSweeney (MCSN: 324874), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action at Enogai, New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 10 July 1943. Wounded during a fierce charge on an enemy light machine-gun position that stood in the way of his company's advance, he refused to leave the scene of action until the mission was completed. His heroic effort aided materially in the complete destruction of the Japanese position. Private First Class McSweeney died during the night from wounds received in the attack.
