CITATION:

Bronze Star : For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on 11 June, 1944, at ........, France. With disregard for his own safety, Pvt Merchon attacked, single-handed an enemy machine gun nest in an outlying corner of the field over which his company assaulted. Although armed only with a carbine and grenades he succeeded in silencing the enemy gun, but was fatally wounded in the action. Pvt. First Class Mershon's conduct was in accordance with the highest standards of military service.
