CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert E. Nowakowski (MCSN: 801843), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, Reinforced, First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Marianas Islands, on 27 July 1944. When his squad was pinned down by heavy enemy machine-gun fire, Private First Class Nowakowski voluntarily and with complete disregard for his own personal safety moved up to close a gap between his unit and the supporting tanks and, by his own intense, accurate fire, put a hostile machine gun out of action and enabled his squad to continue its attack. Then, observing a squad member who was wounded, he unhesitatingly crawled out under fierce enemy fire to his assistance, succeeded in rendering aid and was dragging the Marine to safety when he himself was killed by a sniper. Private First Class Nowakowski's splendid initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and unselfish efforts on behalf of another were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his county.
